Does this answer it?:In 1891, the United States demanded compensation from Chile; in 1895 it demanded Britain to acknowledge the Monroe Doctrine; and then in 1898, the U.S.S Maine exploded in Havana harbor, causing the Spanish-American War. A swift American victory in the war confirmed the nation’s status as a world power, but the war brought home to Americans the need for a shorter route between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The Panama Canal would be built across Central America, linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and making global shipping much faster.
