The sympathetic division of the postganglionic terminal ends with postganglionic fibers and they are adrenergic and use noradrenaline as a neurotransmitter. The parasympathetic division has postganglionic fibers that are cholinergic and use acetylcholine as a neurotransmitter. The location of the preganglionic terminal ends in the gray column of the spinal cord. The nucleus of the cranial nerves is located in the homologous motor nucleus. The location of the postganglionic terminal ends to a ganglion. They lie close to or within the organs they innervate. The adrenal medulla develops in tandem with the sympathetic nervous system and acts as a modified sympathetic ganglion, similar to post-ganglionic neurons. In the sympathetic division, the primary neurotransmitters are adrenergic and norepinephrine.
