Question 2 Soap is sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid etc. The concept of hydrolysis of salt should be dealt with in order to account for the PH of soap solution. Soap can be considered to be salt of a weak acid with a strong base and can be represented as RCOO- Na+ where R is a long chain hydrocarbon. RCOO- Na+upon hydrolysis gives carboxylic acid, RCOOH and NaOH as the products. The weak acid carboxylic acid is dissociation only partially whereas the strong acid NaOH is completely dissociation. The solution experiences a domination of the hydroxide ion. Hence the PH value will be in the alkaline zone that is above 7.
